“Sonny was born premature at 32 weeks, and from there it seems to have been an uphill climb. We started noticing that Sonny was not hitting milestones as a typically developing baby so we went to his pediatrician and she suggested to get an MRI. Exactly two days after Sonny turned 2, we got his official diagnosis of Spastic Diplegia Cerebral Palsy. From there we started doing A LOT of physical therapy as well as speech and occupational therapies. We also began to research ways to improve Sonny's life! We found out about a life-changing surgery called selective dorsal rhizotomy, SDR for short, and applied immediately! SDR is a spinal surgery that helps eliminate the spasticity (tightness) in patients lower extremities, who have spastic diplegia cerebral palsy. After a year-long battle with our insurance denying us five times for the procedure, we decided to raise the money ourselves! An anonymous donor heard Sonny's story and decided to fund his entire procedure! Before having SDR Sonny was primarily crawling, he could take a few independent steps before losing his balance, and used a wheelchair. Six months after after surgery Sonny is now fully ambulatory and walks completely independently!” - Sonny’s Mom
